"There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life:
music and cats."
~Albert Schweitzer

It is up to us
The cats and kittens of the Hobo Hotel offer the pure and simple joy of giving of yourself to an animal.

Bottle Feed Kittens

kittensA popular, but demanding volunteer opportunity, bottle feeding takes all sorts of talents, including a working knowledge of what-to-do-when.

Before signing on for this, recognize that this is a significant time commitment. For example, 1-week old kittens require feeding every 2-3 hours through the night!

We help along the way by coaching you and providing resources here on the web. To get an idea, click "read more."

Bouree's Outreach

Bouree's Outreach is a catch and release program the Hobo Hotel started in 2005. It is named for a cat that turned out to be one our major success stories, "Bouree."Uh Oh

In our first year, with the help of "trappers," we managed to catch and alter 32 feral cats. In 2006, we experienced a 93% increase by catching 62. As of October of 2009, we've already trapped 67 tame cats and 65 untamed!

This all sounds fine except that the
number of cats and kittens euthanized right here in Calcasieu Parish is still an issue.

If you are willing to care for a few "spayed/neutered" untamed kitties, please call 439-2428 and leave a message.  Other ways you can help:

Evacuate the cats

In the event of a hurricane, or other emergency, the cats of the Hobo Hotel need to be evacuated. With this and "Rita memories" in mind, the board of directors has developed an emergency preparedness plan.

Integral to the plan is the need for volunteers willing to pick up and care for one, two or more cats as you depart. Ideally, these volunteers will already have pet carriers, but don't let that keep you from offering to help.

If you can help, contact Carol Cain at 439-2428.

Foster

Help turn me around The Foster progam gives people who cannot make long term commitments a chance to make a difference in a cat or kitten's life.

With a little patience, a shy cat can become a marvelous companion and even a lap cat. The foster program also provides an opportunity to "make a match."

Check with head Pu Scooper,Carol Cain to see who needs some special attention.

Even if we do not currently have foster cats or kittens available, please complete a volunteer form because we are working hard to increase this volunteer base.

Pu Scooper Squad

OK, OK, it doesn't sound very glamours, but believe it or not, our PS Squad has a darn good time!

Besides the "feel good" of helping the Hobo Hotel, you get to visit with the cats and kittens.

We've got some WONDERFUL PSers, but we need more. We'll take once a month, once a week, or once a quarter commitments. If you know of a cleaning service that might donate in this regard, perhaps you could approach them. We''re always happy to promote busineses that support us!

John Ervin is in charge of the Pu Scooper Squad, which is physical labor-cleaning cages, sweeping/mopping floors, cleaning litter boxes, etc....

Tender Loving Care for not-so-tender-cats!

Some cats need extra attention to learn that humans are not going to harm them. This can be a slow, but extremely rewarding volunteer effort.
